In an effort to distinguish between Class A and Class B miracles, Dr. Morris told the true story of a young pilot named Tom (now with Missionary Aviation Fellowship) who was flying at 30,000 feet when his plane exploded. Even the miracles which are not of this revolting character are childish tricks, like the tricks of a conjurer, never solemn acts of power and love. Jesus’ disciples are traveling across the Sea of Galilee. We love crowds, especially those that fill our pews and coffers. Here was a man with a message from God. In the miracles of Jesus we see the sympathy and compassion of God. Trench, Miracles, pp. Harrison, A Short Life of Christ, pp. Mark 4:35 – 8:13 includes four crossings of the Sea of Galilee (4:35; 5:21; 6:45; 8:13)—back and forth between the western Jewish side and the eastern Gentile side. vii. Other boats were with him. The event is described in terms of the power of God in action. Mark 4:35-41 highlights that usage in a few ways. 25-26. 98 “...Woolston undertook, by the engines of allegorical interpretation, to dislodge them from these also, and with this view published his notorious Letters on the Miracles. That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. Mark 4:35-41 The Word of God . He warns him that Pharaoh will require him to legitimate his mission, to produce his credentials that he is indeed God’s ambassador; and equips him with the powers which shall justify him as such, which, in other words, shall be his signs (Exod. He becomes our last resort rather than our first resort. Not so in the Gospels. 10; 2 Chr. And other boats were with him. On a map of Israel the sea looks like a large lake, but from a small fishing boat it would look enormous, especially in a storm. (10) They were free from retaliation. I affirm this of all our Lord’s miracles; for that single one, which seems an exception, the cursing of the barren fig-tree, has no right really to be considered such. 19), not removed; a sound hand is withered and dried up (1 Kin. The Gospel miracle cannot be isolated from this service. In this world troubles are going to come… it’s how we respond to those troubled times that matters! “They were greatly afraid” (v. 41a). If you miss the key, you miss the whole parable. Note these dissimilarities between these two stories: • Jonah sailed for Tarshish to avoid his God-given call to save the Ninevite Gentiles. No doubt, He was completely exhausted, as any preacher could testify. On a first read, Mark 4:35-41 looks like a demonstration of Jesus’ astonishing power — and so it is. The ASV, which is also in the public domain due to expired copyrights, was a very good translation, but included many archaic words (hast, shineth, etc. You don’t have to live very long to realize that trials and hardship and storms are inevitable. A new teaching? “God, don’t you care that we are dying?” But the Father knows our needs and loves us enough even to send his own son to save us. (They were fisherman: 1:16-19.) Mark 4:35-41 In Mark 4:35-41 we read of an account that every child has heard at the knee of his or her Bible class teacher at some time. But the sad truth is that many theologians throughout the history of the church have not taken any of the miracles of our Lord seriously. However, Peter’s vision will dim, and the disciples will continue to fear. Skeptics, like Hume, held that miracles are simply incredible, because they contradict man’s normal experience.95 Since Hume doubted that nothing could be known with absolute certainty, those phenomenon which took place outside of the normal course of nature could never be accepted as true. Mark 4:35-41 NIV. The disciples interpret Jesus’ sleep as evidence that he does not care enough to save them (and himself) from impending death. The enormous difference between himself and those early Church writers, to whom he appeals, and whose views he professes to be only re-asserting, is this: they said, This history, being real, has also a deeper ideal sense; he upon the contrary, Since it is impossible that this history can be real, therefore it must have a spiritual significance. We have already dealt with the period of preparation, and are now considering the presentation of Jesus as the Messiah, the Savior of the world. We impugn the character of God by challenging His failure to act in our defense. The Search OF the Savior: Why Jesus Came, Part 2 (Gal. Jesus performs miracles of healing and exorcism among Jews and Gentiles alike. They are strong, self-reliant men who would handle moderate danger as a matter of course. The fact that it stopped at the time of our Lord’s rebuke is evidence of His sovereignty over nature. Now we’re in a place where we can see what Jesus’ disciples are made of. 40He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? On many occasions, the crowds (even the disciples) were amazed and astonished by the works of our Lord (e.g. 2), and some which the later prophets wrought (2 Kin. The disciples panic and want Jesus, their leader, to share their concern—to show a sense of urgency that might lead to a remedy. i. They were afraid of the storm, and now they are afraid of Jesus. In Luke, they say, “Master, master, we are dying!” (Luke 8:24). The Jews believed that only God had power over the winds and the seas. 37A big wind storm (Greek: lailaps megale) arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so much that the boat was already filled. The observation was well worth the making; for the fact which we are thus bidden to note is indeed eminently characteristic of the miracles of the N.T. Miracles of the Law, they preserve a character that accords with the Law; being oftentimes fearful outbreaks of God’s anger against the unrighteousness of men; such for instance are the signs and wonders in Egypt, many of those in the desert (Num. The Savior bore men’s sickneases and infirmities in the days of public ministry, and their sins he bore at its close.” Harrison, A Short Life of Christ, p. 117. Origen pointed out long ago that this term ‘wonder’ is never employed alone in the New Testament, but always in conjunction with some other term which suggests something far greater than a mere spectacle.100. We do not doubt God’s power to act in our behalf; we wonder at His refusal to act. 4-5. 6. This often results in high winds—and waves that can top thirty feet (Lockyer, 402). The ship, they tell us, could not have sunk.109 It is my personal opinion that the disciples believed that Jesus was fully able to save them. That answer is not difficult to arrive at. It is a short sermon, only about 12 minutes in length. Does debt affect giving in modern times in light of the Israelite tithe and slaves? On that day, as evening drew on, Jesus said to his disciples: "Let us cross to the other side." They are not true myths, mythical stories with ‘spiritual lessons,’ but real events conveying spiritual truths. Where there was little faith, little was accomplished (cf. Jesus had spent the entire day teaching the multitudes (verse 35), entering into a new phase of teaching by the use of parables. Read verse in New King James Version The most pregnant term used with reference to the miracles of our Lord is ‘sign’ (semeion), which focuses upon the deeper meaning of the miracle.101 A sign is a miracle which conveys a truth about our Lord Jesus. Mark 4:35-41 NRSV On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, "Let us go across to the other side." Miraculous deeds were not unknown to the age in which our Lord revealed Himself to men. So far, Mark has done little to draw our attention to them. Jesus’ calm voice and brief commands reflect his authority over the elements. The miracles which He does, so those that are done in his honour, are idle or monstrous; the ox and the ass worshipping Him, a new-born infant in the crib, may serve for an example. The Sea of Galilee is in the deepest part of the Northern Jordan rift—700 feet below sea level—surrounded by steep cliffs and mountains except in its southern extremities. If you think the seed represents money, you miss the parable. No fee was expected or accepted. When Jesus was awakened, He rebuked the winds and the waves. The journey begins, 1:1-5:43. Mark 4:35-41 He Will Not Let You Perish. What is the worst storm you've ever been through? The Sea of Galilee was surrounded by hills, through which the winds violently funneled, creating violent storms which ceased as quickly as began. So when Jesus rebukes the wind and says to the sea, “Peace! When the last Adam (Jesus Christ) came nature immediately recognized its master. INVOLVING HARDSHIP AND APPARENT RISK. When they could stand it no longer, they abruptly and rudely wakened the Master with words of rebuke, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” (Mark 4:38). Sebastian Junger’s book, The Perfect Storm (also made into a movie), helped us to appreciate the danger of a small boat during a storm. The miracles of our Lord are an essential part of that presentation, for, in part, they authenticate His claim as Messiah. The Third Readings: The Gospels (GrandRapids: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 2001), Hooker, Morna D., The Gospel According to Saint Mark (Hendrickson Publishers, 1991), Jensen, Richard A., Preaching Mark’s Gospel (Lima, OH: C.S.S. Chapter 4 opens with a series of parables (the sower, the lamp and the bushel basket, the growing seed, and the mustard seed). (2) They accredited Jesus. xii. When our Lord presented Himself at the synagogue in Nazareth, He quoted a passage from Isaiah chapter 61: “And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Several purposes emerge from the Scriptures for the exercise of miracles by our Lord. 9,10). 23-25); leprosies are inflicted (Num. Almost every miracle of our Lord was designed to meet a physical need. I find it helpful to distinguish between what can be called ‘Class A’ and ‘Class B’ miracles. The most interesting point about this true story is that Dr. Morris used it as an illustration of what he called Class B miracles. There has been much speculation regarding the meaning of these other boats, none of it convincing. (4) They were accomplished openly. Not but that these works also are for the most part what our Lord’s are altogether and with no single exception, namely, works of evident grace and mercy. xvi. Jesus’ disciples wouldn’t have understood the physics, but they would be all too familiar with the danger. Many Bible students seem to think that the underlying problem was the lack of the disciples faith in God’s protection since Messiah was in their midst. How is it that you have no faith?” (Mark 4:40). (7) They were accomplished in a variety of circumstances. Although the synoptic writers describe the event independently, Mark (as reported by Peter) chose to report their rudeness by the fact that He was not called Master, or Lord, but only Teacher. The other two stories are: • Jesus walking on water to the disciples’ boat in a windstorm—and their fear and hardness of heart (6:45-52). also 2 Corinthians 12:12; 2 Thessalonians 2:9). Jesus, however, could walk away from the crowd to pray or to carry on his work elsewhere. The words of our Lord, and even more, the obedience of the wind and the waves overcame the disciples with wonder and awe. The question of the disciples is probably rhetorical, and the answer is left for us to supply. As Tom was plummeting to the earth, he pulled the rip cord, but his chute failed to open. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. He “gave a sign to the prophet, whom He sent to protest against the will-worship of Jeroboam (1 Kin. Calvin on 2 Cor. However, while Jesus is like Jonah, he is greater than Jonah. While in the cults, a fee of payments was expected, the miracles of our Lord were free of charge. 100 “Origen … long ago called attention to the fact that the name repara is never in the N.T. To many, His deeds were at least those of a prophet (cf. The first readers of this Gospel—at least the Jewish ones—would be intimately familiar with the Old Testament, and would not fail to note the similarities, which include: • A journey by boat toward Gentile territory for the purpose of redeeming Gentile lives, • A great storm at sea that threatens to sink the boat and drown the occupants, • The principal characters (Jonah and Jesus) asleep during the storm, • The principle characters take an action that results in the stilling of the storm, • Similar language between Mark’s story and the Septuagint (Greek) version of Jonah—i.e, a variant of the Greek word, apollymi for “perishing” and “drowning.”. “Wescott wrote, ‘They (miracles) are essentially a part of the revelation, and not merely a part of it.’ Warfield expressed himself similarly. Mark 4:35–41 Jesus Calms a Storm 35 n On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “ Let us go across to the other side .” 36 And leaving the crowd, … 103 Cf. Our Lord made many attempts to avoid the spectacular and to arouse misdirected Messianic hopes (Matthew 8:4; 12:16; 16:20, etc.). By reason of His work alone, men should receive Him as Messiah (John 10:37-38). Leaving the crowd on the beach, Jesus and his disciples embark and head for the east side of the lake. Jesus teaches “as having authority” (1:22), and amazes the people of Capernaum, who say, “What is this? Mark 4:35-41: Faith Over Fear. Don’t You care? (2) They were reasonable. Mark 4, Coffman Commentaries on the Bible, ... (Mark 4:35-41). 38He himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion, and they woke him up, and told him, “Teacher (Greek: didaskale), don’t you care that we are dying?” 39He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! The real problem of the disciples is precisely that of Christians today; they did not rebuke Jesus for His inability, but rather for His indifference. They are signs and pledges of something more than and beyond themselves (Isai. Mark 3:22ff.) If ‘miracle’ emphasizes the cause of the miraculous event, ‘wonder’ (teras) , underscores its effect on those who are witnesses. Why are you so afraid?” - Matthew 8:26aProps: 2 clear plastic cups, one cup 1/3 filled with vegetable oil, one cup 1/2 filled with red juice or Kool- Aid (make sure there is more juice than oil); permanent marker The people expected Messiah to present Himself by signs (John 7:31). 35On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side.” 36Leaving the multitude, they took him with them, even as he was, in the boat. At least four of Jesus’ disciples are fishermen, have surely survived storms on this sea, and have also surely known fishermen who were lost at sea. As we have previously noted, the miracles of Jesus were not merely deeds to authenticate the message of Messiah, but a vital part of that message. 3).” Miracles, pp. Mark 4:35-41 He Will Not Let You Perish. We don’t know whether we can survive them. They terrify us. 11; xxxviii. xii. All in the plane were killed except Tom. He chose for the showing out of this, not one among all the sinners who were about Him, but displayed his power upon a tree, which, itself incapable of feeling, might yet effectually serve as a sign and warning to men. This is in contrast, not only to the desires of his own disciples (Luke 9:52-56), but also the practices of other ‘healers’ of His day, and even of what often occurred in the Old Testament.107, (11) They were eschatological. Others, Like Woolston have found the Gospel miracles to have no factual or historical validity, but are merely ‘tales’ which contain a much deeper spiritual truth.98, Such are the views of the skeptics and critics of God’s Word. • Jonah did not quiet the storm but only accepted responsibility for his disobedience—God quieted the storm. In contrast, the Gospels show a highly ethical use of His power, in a way totally consistent with His person. Thy faithfulness also surrounds Thee. But the miracles which He accomplished were far different than those claimed by other religions. Mark 6:5,6). “don’t you care that we are dying?” (v. 38b). Our Lord’s power over demons demonstrates the coming of the Kingdom: “But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you” (Luke 11:20). Following along were other little ships (verse 36). ii. The miracles of the Gospels were accomplished on the basis of faith, either that of our Lord (cf. Jesus’ ministry begins as he is walking along the Sea of Galilee. Such a storm arose as they were in the middle of the lake. How can he help if he will not even rouse from his slumber? He had come to restore man from his fallen state, and creation from the chaos resulting from sin. ‘Class A’ miracles overrule or transcend the laws of nature. There are a number of parallels between this story and that of Jonah (Marcus, 337-340 and Edwards, 149-151). “Let’s go over to the other side” (v. 35b). 12: “They are called signs because they are no idle spectacles, but are designed to teach. We would expect that the disciples, in crisis, would address Jesus as Lord instead of Teacher. However, sleep can also represent passivity in a moment that cries out for an active response. “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” What irked these men was not that Jesus was helpless in the face of the storm but heedless of it. When He blesses, it is men; but when He smites, it is an unfeeling tree.” Trench, Miracles, pp. It was only when the disciples were snatched from the jaws of death that they sensed their inability and His omnipotence. xii. Mark 2:12; 4:41; 6:51, etc.). But not only did the wind and the waves need a word of rebuke, so did the faithless disciples. Another child by accident runs against Him, and throws Him down; whereupon He, being exasperated, exclaims, ‘As thou hast made Me to fall, so shalt thou fall and not rise’; at the same hour the child fell down and expired. The truth of Mark 4:21 has a double meaning: (a) that which is inherent in it, and (b) that which it denotes in context. The other side is the Gentile side. Mark 4:10 "And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable." We see this same attitude in Jesus' disciples in our text this morning. Our Lord most often merely spoke a word, and at times performed His miraculous deeds at a distance (cf. ‘Class B’ miracles do not overtly violate natural laws. While so many alleged ‘miracles’ of today defy documentation, those of our Lord were mainly public. If you can relate to this, you are not alone.
